The Pittsburgh Business Times confirms that car-sharing giant Uber Technologies Inc. is exploring driverless vehicle technology. The newspaper snapped a photo of the car navigating Pittsburgh roads.

The car, a modified Ford Fusion, has a large and ungainly box of sensors atop the roof, capped by a rotating sensor array similar to the one found on Google Inc.'s self-driving test cars.

Uber hastened to emphasize to the newspaper that the vehicle does have a pilot aboard. The company describes the car, which is emblazoned with the logo for the Uber Advanced Technologies Center on the side, part of "early research efforts regarding mapping, safety and autonomy systems."

In February, the company announced a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University to develop the technology center, which is staffed, in part, with CMU personnel.
