Toyota Motor Corp. is expanding capacity to take its just-introduced Mirai fuel-cell-powered sedan to 3,000 units per year by 2017 from an initial target of 700, The Nikkei reports.

The car went on sale in Japan and the U.S. on Dec. 15. By then Toyota had already spent 20 billion yen ($170 million) to hike its annual production plan for 2015 to 2,100 units. The company has orders for 1,400 car in Japan alone.

Toyota's investment to reach 3,000 units of capacity will total "several dozen" billion yen, according to the newspaper.
