Israel-based Mobileye NV says its new Road Experience Management (REM) system can use data generated from vehicles on the road to create and update maps, including precise information needed for fully autonomous vehicles. The technology will debut on future General Motors Co. vehicles. Mobileye also has a development agreement with Volkswagen and says a deal with a third carmaker will be announced soon. Building on Mobileye's EyeQ processing platforms and existing vehicle cameras, REM pinpoints landmark and roadway information. The system operates at extremely low bandwidths (10kb/km of travel), which the supplier says helps enable group-generated information sharing and updates. Backend software running on the cloud collates and integrates data sent by various vehicles with REM to automatically update map information. This includes high-definition lane data and other localized information to help enable automated lane changes and other driver-assist functions.
