Honda Motor Co. confirms it will phase out its Insight hybrid sedan and the electric version of its Fit minicar in the American market by the end of this year.

Honda Insight

The company tells Edmunds.com it will halt Insight production this summer and stop sales by year-end. Fit EV production will end this autumn, but Honda will support customers through their lease period.

Neither model was a strong seller. Insight sales fell 18% to 4,800 units last year, and Fit EV demand totaled fewer than 600 cars, according to Autodata Corp.

The Insight is powered by a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine and 13-hp electric motor. Honda says it is dropping the model in large part because it is shifting to the two-electric-motor architecture it debuted in the 2014 Accord hybrid and plug-in sedans.
