General Motors Co. CEO Mary Barra will deliver an opening speech on Sept. 7 at the 21st ITS World Congress in Detroit. Her subject: GM's take on the changing transportation environment and how it relates to connected, self-driving and electric vehicles.

Barra says connectivity has the potential to drive of more positive change for customers in terms of safety, efficiency and the environment than "any other technological innovation our industry has produced in decades."

ITS World Congress is expected to draw more than 10,000 attendees to discuss innovations in transportation and how they may be deployed to address current and future transportation challenges. This year's event will include more than 20 interactive demonstrations, an "entrepreneurial village" and a racetrack where students will compete with EVs they build themselves.

GM is a major sponsor of this year's conference, an international event which is being held in Detroit for the first time.
