Ford Motor Co. will host what it describes as the first carmaker-sponsored app development conference on Sept. 8-11 in Las Vegas.

The meeting will be part of the Super Mobility Week forum in Las Vegas. Ford says its conference aims to encourage software developers to create apps that "enhance or redefine the automobile's role in an overall connected life."

Developers will base their apps on vehicle-generated data from Ford and more than 200 data sets provided by Los Angeles about the city's traffic patterns, mobility metrics, crime reports and crash records.

Events will include a general meeting, 12-hour "hackathon" and a contest among 10 finalists to showcase their in-car apps during the Connected Car Expo to be held ahead of the Los Angeles auto show in November.
