Ford Motor Co. is installing a system that combines solar panels and a wind sail at four U.S. dealerships to help power their facilities and electric vehicle charging stations.

Developed by Wind Energy Corp., the so-called Windy System features a 7-kw solar array and column-shaped windmill. The company estimates each system will generate 20,000 kw of electricity per year.

The wind sail will be emblazoned with the Ford logo and name of the participating dealership.

Wind Energy tested the technology at a Ford dealership in Texas. The $750,000 test program will install systems at stores in California, Michigan and New York early next year. Ford describes the installations as permanent.
