Ford Motor Co. and Detroit-based DTE Energy Co. will begin construction next month of a 68,000-sq-ft solar array at the carmaker's world headquarters in Dearborn, Mich.

The project will create a 360-space carport that includes 30 charging stations for electric cars. Ford, which describes the canopy as the largest solar array in Michigan, expects to open the facility early next year.

The facility will generate about 1 megawatt of electricity, according to Ford. DTE will build, operate and maintain the system.
