Ford Motor Co. has broadened its GoDrive one-way car-sharing service in London.

The rollout follows a pilot test of the concept with 100 users and a handful of cars. Now GoDrive is testing a fleet of 50 Ford Focus electric and Fiesta small cars that 2,000 initial users can obtain and drop off at 20 locations in the city.

There is no membership fee for GoDrive. Customers use a smartphone app to select a car 15 minutes before it's needed. If they change their mind within that period, the car becomes immediately available to another customer.

Drivers pay on a per-minute basis equal to about €7 for 30 minutes. The fee covers vehicle usage, €141 in damage insurance and London's €16 "congestion" charge. There is no mileage limit, and customers get five free minutes in which to familiarize themselves with the car.

Ford says it will use the expanded GoDrive test to evaluate user behavior, various pricing strategies and additional parking options. The company also is testing variations on the care-share concept in Germany, India and the U.S.
