Fiat SpA is preparing to launch a car-sharing service in Milan, Italy, according to the city's mayor.

Reuters says Fiat will join Daimler AG and the city's public transport company in offering residents a short-term car rental service. Fiat confirms it is developing such a system but has not indicated when it will begin or what cars will be used.

Ford, Daimler, PSA, Renault, Toyota and Volkswagen also are testing demand for car-sharing schemes in urban markets. Users consider the services less expensive and more practical than traditional car ownership.

Last month Frost & Sullivan predicted that Europe's car-sharing market would surge from 700,000 users in 2011 to more than 15 million by 2020.
