Daimler AG says it plans to debut its car2go car-sharing service in Chongqing, China, later this year.

The company has signed a letter of intent with the city to deploy several hundred of its two-seat Smart minicars. Car2go enables customers to rent the cars by the hour for one- or two-way trips.

Daimler's Car2go business currently operates some 12,000 cars in 29 cities in Europe and North America. The system claims more than 1 million customers and 400,000 rentals per week. The service began in Germany at the end of 2008.
