Daimler AG says its car2go car-sharing business will gain 100,000 registered users by year-end to surpass 1 million customers.

The short-term rental service began in Germany at the end of 2008. It offers customers the ability to pick up a car at a "free-floating" parking spot and leave it at or near their destinations.

Car2go currently operates some 12,000 Smart ForTwo city cars in 29 cities in Europe and North America. The scheme, which has not yet earned a profit, may eventually be introduced in China, according to the company.
