Audi AG says it was the first carmaker to receive an autonomous driving permit by California when the state's new law permitting such vehicles on public roads took effect on Tuesday.

Audi has been testing self-driving cars in Europe and other U.S. states where such research is allowed. Permitting similar work in California is helpful for Audi because its Electronics Research Lab is located there.

The company says its "highly automated piloted driving system" should be ready to go on sale in five years.
