Audi AG CEO Rupert Stadler says successful cities of the future will depend on city managers starting to work now with the auto industry to establish uniform digital communication standards.

Stadler says all types of public and private transportation will one day be connected to traffic signs, stop lights, parking lots and charging stations. But he notes that 75% of the digital infrastructure required to enable such a system has not yet been created.

Gains from digitizing personal transport will include savings in fuel, space and pollutants, says Stadler, who made his remarks at an economic conference organized by German Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU political party.
