Chennai-based truckmaker Ashok Leyland Ltd. tells reporters it plans to begin making all-electric buses in India next year.

The vehicles will be variants of electric buses made in the U.K. by the company's Optare plc affiliate. The British unit makes the 50-passenger Versa EV bus and smaller Solo model.

Ashok Leyland Managing Director Vinod Dasari says the company is likely to produce both models in India after displaying them in January at India's Bus Expo in Delhi. The company also is interested in Optare's just-introduced double-decker MetroDecker bus.
