More than 102,000 of the 250,000 electric and plug-in hybrid car sales in the U.S. over the past four years occurred in California, according to the California Plug-In Electric Vehicle Collaborative.

The group cites data from the California Air Resources Board, hybricars.com and Michigan-based research firm Baum & Associates.

The White House has set a goal of putting 1 million such models on the road nationwide by the end of next year. California alone is targeting 1.5 million plug-in electrics by 2025. Baum estimates that EV and plug-in sales will reach nearly 300,000 units in the U.S. this year.
