Volkswagen AG is recalling 56,200 vehicles in the U.S. with rear axle suspension springs that could fracture and damage a tire.

The callback targets Golf five-door hatches (2015-2019 models), Golf Sportwagens (2017-2019) Jetta sedans (2017-2019) and Tiguan small crossovers (2018-2019). VW attributes the problem to an improper choice of materials and production processes by its supplier.

The company expects to begin the recall in mid-April when it secures the necessary supply of repair parts.
