Volkswagen AG’s supervisory board is likely on Friday to approve plans to turn its assembly plant in Zwickau, Germany, into a production center for electric cars, sources tell Reuters.

The factory, which employs almost 9,000 people, currently makes piston-powered Golf hatchbacks and Passat sedans. Those models could be reassigned to VW plants in Emden and Wolfsburg, Reuters says. VW has declined to comment.

VW Group has said it intends to spend more than €20 billion ($24 billion) by 2030 to add at least one electrified model to all 300 models marketed by its brands.
