A team led by EDAG Engineering GmbH and Siemens AG have developed a prototype spaceframe with 3D-printed aluminum components.

The group—which also includes BLM, Concept Laser, Constellium and Fraunhofer IAPT—showed the NextGenerationSpaceframe 2.0 concept at this month’s Hannover Messe manufacturing technology show in Germany.

The extruded aluminum parts are produced via an additive manufacturing process and joined to other components with a “jigless” welding system. The process enables shorter development times, greater design and production flexibility, and the potential to lower costs, according to the partners.
