Oxford Proposes Broad Ban on Piston-Powered Vehicles

Oxford, England, proposes to prohibit all vehicles with internal combustion engines by 2035, Reuters reports.

The ban would begin in 2020 for cars, taxis and light commercial vehicles on six streets in the central city. Over the ensuing 15 years the so-called Zero Emission Zone would expand to cover the entire city and include large piston-powered trucks.

Reuters says the plan, which it describes as the most radical British scheme to date, will be finalized at the end of November. Last month the U.K. said it would prohibit the sale of diesel and gasoline cars in 2040.
