The Transportation Research Center (TRC) in East Liberty, Ohio, has broken ground on the SmartCenter for autonomous and connected vehicles.

The 540-acre SmartCenter will be located within TRC’s existing site, with construction to be completed by the end of 2019. The first phase—a high-speed, 1.2-mile course with as many as six lanes and an intersection—will open later this year.

An urban course with reconfigurable intersections, roundabouts and other designs will be added later. The center will be supported by a 10,000-sq-ft control building and garage, an underground power distribution and fiber network, dedicated-short-range communication and high-speed wireless capabilities.

Funding for the $45 million project is being provided by several Ohio government agencies and Ohio State University.
