Mexico Says NAFTA Talks Could Continue for Weeks

Mexico’s Economy Minister tells reporters that talks with the U.S. about the North American Free Trade Agreement are moving ahead but could take weeks longer to complete.

“We are very close,” says Ildefonso Guajardo. But he adds that completing the negotiations will take a “few days or weeks.”

Guajardo confirms that Canada isn’t likely to re-join the NAFTA discussions until key issues are resolved between the U.S. and Mexico. Reuters says two of those sticking points relate to workers’ wages and the proportion of local content vehicles must contain to avoid tariffs.

Late today President Donald Trump reiterated his threat to impose stiff tariffs on Canadian-made vehicles if the country fails to support the NAFTA revisions he seeks.
