Mazda Motor Corp. will recall 187,800 of its sporty Mazda3 small sedans in the U.S. to replace a defective relay that could block operation of the windshield wipers.

The campaign involves 2016-2018 models. Mazda plans to begin notify owners in early June.

Mazda became aware of the problem at the end of 2015, but it still hasn’t pinpointed the root cause. The company has concluded that failures are caused by a combination of design, electrical and manufacturing contamination issues.

Mazda dealers will replace the entire front body control module, which contains a redesigned wiper relay.
