Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus L 500h luxury coupe received AutoBlog’s Technology of the Year award for the car’s new multi-stage hybrid system.

AutoBlog editors praised the L 500h hybrid for its uncompromising approach to optimizing efficiency, performance and comfort. The multi-stage architecture teams a 4-speed automatic with a continuously variable transmission system that’s paired with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and two electric motors.

The Lexus hybrid edged out two other finalists—the Nissan Rogue compact crossover and Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 pickup truck—for the AutoBlog award. The Rogue features Nissan’s semi-autonomous ProPilot Assist technology, while the Colorado ZR2 uses Multimatic spool-valve shocks to enhance off-road capabilities.
