Dean Evans, who joined Hyundai Motor Co. four years ago to head the carmaker’s U.S. marketing operations, has left the company to pursue other opportunities.

Brian Smith, chief operating officer of Hyundai's U.S. arm, will assume Evans' responsibilities on an interim basis.

Evans is known for his data-driven approach to marketing and a series of humorous “feel good" ads. This includes several high-profile Super Bowl spots, such as one this year that contrasted Hyundai’s no-hassle Shopper Assurance approach with stereotypical dealership haggling, root canals, vegan dinner parties and other unpleasant experiences.

Evans, 52, previously held marketing positions with Chrysler, Land Rover, Subaru and Dealer.com.
