General Motors Co. plans to launch a pilot test this summer of a service in which car owners can rent out their own vehicles, sources tell Bloomberg News.

GM will test the peer-to-peer concept, which will function like Airbnb Inc.’s rental service for homes, through its Maven car-sharing business, according to the news service. Owners of GM vehicles would list their cars’ availability through Maven and split the revenue received with the service.

Two other startups, Getaround and Turo, already offer similar rental schemes. Bloomberg says Turo’s site listings have tripled to 200,000 over the past two years. Getaround is allied with Toyota Motor Corp. and others.
