General Motors Co. says its factory in Hamtramck, Mich., has begin shipping Cadillac's new ELR extended-range electric coupe to U.S. dealers.

The cars will be available to buyers in January. Cadillac has not indicated a sales target for the heavily equipped $76,000 car.

The ELR shares its powertrain with the $39,000 Chevrolet Volt and its European Opel Ampera variant, both of which also are built at the Hamtramck facility.

All three models can travel about 35 miles in electric mode and more than 300 miles when their 1.4-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine/generator system is used to automatically replenish the 16.5-kWh battery.
