Ghosn Could Face Another 6 Months in Jail

Carlos Ghosn, who has been held in a Tokyo jail since Nov. 19 for financial misdeeds as chairman of Nissan Motor Co., could spend another six months behind bars, according to his lawyer.

Ghosn’s current period of detention will expire on Jan. 11. But prosecutors can repeatedly extend his incarceration by filing new charges.

Attorney Motonari Otsuru tells reporters that suspects cases such as this one aren’t likely to become eligible for release on bail until the trial for their first indicted offense occurs. That isn’t likely to occur until June, he adds.

In the meantime, the judge overseeing Ghosn’s case says the executive’s continuing detention is justified because of the risk that he could otherwise tamper with evidence or flee Japan.
