Ford Motor Co. is recalling 1.5 million of its F-150 fullsize pickup trucks in North America to fix a problem that could make the transmission to abruptly downshift into first gear even when traveling at high speed.
The campaign involves 2011-2015 model trucks with 6-speed automatic transmissions. Ford says an intermittent loss of signal from a speed sensor can trick the transmission control module into selecting first gear.

Ford reports five crashes, including one involving a whiplash injury, that may have been caused by the flaw. Dealers will fix the problem by updating the control module software.
