Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says 3,200 employees at its Mirafiori plant will work halftime through 2019 while the facility retools to make electric cars, Automotive News Europe reports.

The plant, which normally employs about 5,000 people, will continue to make the Maserati Levante luxury crossover vehicle. But demand for the $77,000 model has slumped in all major markets, and production has dropped about 30% this year.

Mirafiori is preparing to add an electric variant of the Fiat 500 minicar in 2020. FCA says 2,400 hourly and salaried workers will begin alternating work at the plant and staying home at the end of December.

Another 800 employees will join them in early March. FCA says the partial layoffs will continue through the end of 2019.
