Deutsche Post Explores Options to Build Electric Van Business

Deutsche Post GHL Group has hired Goldman Sachs to help it decide whether to expand its StreetScooter electric van subsidiary, Reuters reports.

Deutsche Post developed the electric StreetScooter for its own use and currently operates about 6,000 of the trucks. But the van has attracted considerable interest among other delivery van fleet operators. In May, StreetScooter doubled its potential ouput by opening a second factory with capacity to make 10,000 EVs annually.

Sources tell Reuters that Deutsche Post is leery of taking on the risks of higher-volume truck production and would prefer to partner with a vehicle manufacturer or sell the unit outright. But the news service notes that CEO Frank Appel also has said the company intends to run StreetScooter for at least two more years.
