Contitech AG has expanded testing of its semi-autonomous driving technology to Germany’s high-speed autobahn.

The tests use prototype vehicles equipped with an array of Conti sensors, operating systems, on-board computers and software. The vehicles can accelerate, brake and steer without driver input on the highway.

A development engineer will ride in the driver’s seat to monitor the system’s performance and take control if necessary. The engineer also will operate the vehicle as it merges into traffic and exits the autobahn.

Conti aims to have fully autonomous driving systems ready for use on the autobahn by 2025. The company also is testing automated vehicle systems in China, Japan and the U.S., including on highways, cities and for parking maneuvers.
