Apple Inc. is moving forward with plans to develop an all-electric vehicle code named Titan, sources tell The Wall Street Journal.

Apple has designated the car a "committed project" that will be finalized by 2019, according to the sources. The Journal says It isn't clear whether "committed" refers to design and engineering goals, production or deliveries.

Apple, which has been evaluating such a project for a year, plans to triple the program's staff to about 1,800 people, the report says. The company already has nabbed several experts in the automotive field, including a former Tesla senior engineer last month.

Apple will apply its battery, sensor and electronics integration expertise to the EV program. It's also developing next-generation technologies for self-driving vehicles. But, unlike tech rival Google Inc., Apple doesn't plan to make its first EV a fully autonomous model, according to the Journal.
