Vehicle occupant safety has come a long was from the days of the first seatbelts. Yet buckling up is as important as ever, even with airbags and other safety advances.

Norbert Kagerer, TRW's vice president of Occupant Safety Systems Engineering, describes key advances in occupant safety and demonstrates two recent advances in seatbelt systems. One extends the seatbelt buckle for easier access, then retracts it when you insert the latch. A second system helps tighten the seatbelt in anticipation of a potential crash.
