Next year’s auto show in Detroit will move from early January to mid-June and double in size with 1 million square feet of new outdoor “floorspace” devoted to hands-on activities.

Why the shift after 40 years? “Cars are meant to move,” says Rod Alberts, executive director of the Detroit Auto Dealers Assn. DADA owns the produces the North American International Auto Show.

Alberts says shifting the show to June recognizes that today’s consumers want to do more than kick the tires on a static vehicle. He says the 2020 show will supplement traditional indoor displays with exciting outdoor ride-and-drive and live demonstrations.
