Global sales of light-duty vehicles will rise less than 1% this year, reversing a 1% dip in 2018, LMC Automotive predicts.

But several factors could affect that fragile momentum, says Jeff Schuster, president of global forecasts. Trade will be a major issue. Schuster points to Brexit and looming uncertainties about U.S.-China and U.S.-Europe tariffs.

Regulations will play a role too. Rulemakers are weighing a freeze on U.S. fuel economy rules, tougher carbon dioxide targets in Europe and revised new-energy vehicle sales policies in China, Schuster notes.
