Innovating with IBM’s “Garage Factory”

IBM’s Garage Factory concept helps carmakers act like a startup, using fast-paced experimentation and business case analysis to identify promising ideas, then scaling them up for mass-market rollouts, says Ben Stanley, automotive research leader for the IBM Institute for Business Value.

The model co-locates all relevant partners from engineers to IT companies to consumers, guiding their efforts with proven lean and agile business processes. Stanley says IBM is involved in a 5-year project with Volkswagen AG that is applying the Garage Factory concept to develop advanced consumer services.
