Honda and steelmaker ArcelorMittal have been developing advanced techniques to weld varying types and thicknesses of steel into sheets, then heat the assembly and hot-stamp it into the structural “rings” that frame the outer and inner parts of a vehicle’s door.

The technique makes the doors stronger yet lighter, says Carolyn LeBlanc, an engineer with Honda R&D Americas. She notes that the company recently employed the technology to debut an industry first: a five-piece, laser-welded and hot stamped inner door ring.
