Carmakers and suppliers are struggling to manage their traditional business while moving into new-mobility operations that demand entirely different cultures and practices, notes Clay Phillips, executive advisor with California-based research institute SRI International.

Leadership teams that are ambidextrous enough to do both are rare. That’s why many companies are responding by splitting themselves in two or spinning off separate mobility companies, Phillips says.
