Your next car may come equipped with electronic headlamps that are permanently on “high” beam, yet create no glare.

The key will be their ability to use cameras, sensors and arrays of electronically controlled LED light sources that shape the output beam according to what’s ahead, says Steve Lietaert, president of Hella Corporate Center USA Inc.

These adaptive lamps will create moving “dark tunnels” of softer light that track pedestrians and oncoming vehicles as your car drives past them. Lietaert says such headlamps will be coming to market in 2020-2021.
