Building a Safety Case for Automated Mobility

October 15, 2016 at 6:11 PM

This 7-page white paper from Ricardo focuses on the safety implications for cities of automated mobility. The report was released in October 2016 during the Automobility 2016 conference presented by Gardner Business Media Inc.’s AutoBeat Daily and Automotive Design & Production.

The report focuses on the need for cities to assess the risks involving vehicles in each of the three phases of autonomy—partial, condition and full—and to consider how safety assurance will be determined. The paper cites pioneering international work by Ricardo Rail in ensuring the safety of autonomous vehicles on both the railway and highway.

The report suggests applying the “V model” used within the rail industry to assess the safety of autonomous systems. The feedback technique involves each step in the testing and simulation process that builds on insights of the previous step to produce a multi-layered safety system that ensures the resulting vehicle does what it is supposed to do.
