When fleets of self-driving, on-demand vehicles take to the roads, they’ll be running almost constantly as they pick up and drop off passengers. That means their powertrains could wear out long before their bodies do.

One solution is Snap, the latest concept from Swiss vehicle innovator Rinspeed AG. Snap’s passenger pod can detach itself automatically from its “skateboard” chassis. The design makes it easy to update the vehicle’s mechanicals, says Peter Fuss, senior automotive advisory partner at EY, which partnered with Rinspeed on the project.

Fuss notes that the self-driving skateboard portion of Snap could drop off pods for use as stationary work rooms or living quarters when their occupants aren’t on the move.
