The American Center for Mobility near Ypsilanti, Mich., has been selected by the U.S. Dept. of Transportation as one of 10 facilities to validate technologies used in self-driving cars.
Andy Smart, chief technology officer for the site, notes that the 330-acre facility currently under development will have low- and high-speed roads and areas that simulate traffic conditions in urban, commercial, residential and rural areas.
The goal is to give carmakers and other developers a safe off-road environment in which to test and verify autonomous driving features in various conditions before putting them on public roadways, Smart says.
